Signs your sacral chakra is imbalanced and what to do about it

Signs your sacral chakra is imbalanced and how to find healing

Sacral chakra — the energetic center of a lot of messy stuff. Stuff many of us struggle with and topics that can uncomfortable to address. So let’s address it, shall we?

The sacral chakra is located in the lower abdomen and points forward and back, rather than down. It is associated with feeling. With creating. With sensuality. And boundaries.

In the chakra workshop I took last week, we tapped into each of our energy centers. The vibrations I felt in each were positive — loving, peaceful, grounding ... all except for the sacral chakra. My heart started racing, I felt like I was at the brink of tears and I wanted to get out as soon as possible.

I wasn't the only one with this experience at the workshop and it's not lost on me we were all women. So ladies, tune in.

Imbalances

An underactive sacral chakra can make you disconnected from your emotions. You might deny yourself activities that bring you pleasure. You might have a low sex drive or struggle to set boundaries. And you likely have body image issues.

An overactive sacral chakra can make you over emotional. You might become too attached to people and depend on them for your happiness. And perhaps your sex drive is unhealthy in that it’s over active to the point of addiction.

There’s an elephant in the room about what can cause a lot of issues in this chakra. Rape and sexual trauma. Something that at least 1 in 5 women experience. Many women come to my classes with tight hips, and I don’t find that to be a coincidence. But the good news is, through knowledge and action, we can heal.

Sacral Chakra Healing

I am a sensual and creative being

  • Repeat a mantra centered around sensuality and/or creativity, like the one above
  • Create something — write, paint, cook and yes, make love
  • Practice Ida Nadi, a pranayama (breathing) exercise where you breathe only through the left nostril for feminine energy
  • Practice postures focused around the pelvis, and take fluid, expressive movements on your mat. Join me for this 15-minute sacral chakra flow!

It’s easy to lose touch of our playfulness and creativity. Many of us spend most of our day in front of a computer. Perhaps you look at spreadsheets all day. But it’s in our nature to create. We are all creative being — not just those of us who are artists for a living.

What can you create? Perhaps it starts by journaling. Or drawing with your kids. Or cooking a delicious meal. Or perhaps it starts in the bedroom. What is calling to you? That’s what’s right.

Besides creating, I like to have a flowy yoga practice to work on the sacral chakra. One that is musically-driven and allows me to move freely — really being present in my body and honoring its needs. It helps me to feel sensual and embrace my feminine energy in a powerful way. Or, I’ll light some candles, put on some sexy tunes and take a nice long bath. Ahhh.

This blog post was taken mostly from my free Chakras 101 program. If you're curious about your energy centers and imbalances, sign up and you'll receive an overview of one chakra per week to help you identify where you might need some attention. Awareness is the first step!
